Project for Stratford International Station at the Olympic Park in London/Stratford.

BASE ELEMENT

Our base element is a 3D corpus consisting of four axes that have a connecting point in the middle. These four axes are standing for our four key aspects (described later), which we based our script on.

By addition of this element a system can be created, which has a hexagonal pattern in the top view. This system is a scale and shapeable structure that can be used in many combinations.

Our algorithmic system is also reflected by this scheme.


ARCHITECTURAL SPACE-SYSTEM and KEY ASPECTS

We have chosen the „stratford international station“ as our location. In our opinion the most important orientation key aspects in this area are:


- the „Olympic Village“ in the north

- the „Dockland Railway Station“ in the northwest

- the park and the Olympic Stadium which are in the south

- and the „Stratford Regional Station“ in that is overlapping with the orientation or view to Stratford in the south-east


furthermore the most important infrastructural key aspects are:


- the underground stations

- the stadiums

- the car-park

- and the city


All of these key aspects, in the surrounding frame of reference, are the parameters for our analyse-script.


ANALYSIS

During the analysis the existing parameters were transformed into 3-Dimensional space-sculptures.

Infrastructure Analysis

As starting point for our analysis of the infrastructure, we took the connections to our infrastructural key aspects. These connections were evaluated according to their intensity of use. The ones who had more human flow received more space and in particular more height. This refers to the human perception, that the same number of people feel better in higher rooms than in lower ones. The result was shell A of our building.

Orientation Analysis

The orientation is based on the most important and worth seeing buildings in the surrounding (orientation key aspects). However, to be able to see them one needs to be in a certain height. The shell B is especially designed to lift visitors into the right heights.

Our building is aligned on these functions. Intersections of key aspects of one group, have the meaning of intensity, higher and more frequented flow and more space demand. Translated in architecture this means: more space. Hence, more height.


DESIGN

Shells

We have two hexagonal systems implemented into our shells.

The bigger hexagonal system is the building’s static support structure and is based on both shells. All forces are taken by this structure and led into the ground.

The smaller system has a brace function and is the building’s glass coat as well as the trestle for the sun protecting fins.


Inner Space

Trough a unconstrained positioning of the rooms, a big and open space could be created. Due to the inside opening between the train level and the ground floor, this atmosphere can also be perceived when people are arriving with a train.

In different heights one can experience everything that is necessary for an international train station. From the sky bar to the ticket desk. The area between these rooms, is not only a space for the flow, but also an area where one can sit down, relax and enjoy the view.


Furniture

Our furniture, as well as the exterior lighting is designed by addition of the base element.
