Concept

Searching for a simple and flexible system to use as a wall-unit i came across a folding technique called “Fischgrätenfaltung” , or “Miura-Ori”, according to a japanese investigator who first described this folding technique scientifically. Changing the way of thinking about it´s ordinary usage (folding paper), changing it´s scale and materiality and adding new components, the object can be seen and used in an overall new context.

Functionality

Using very simple control elements, like a combination of a steel cable and a cable tensioner, you can constantly transform the object. By increasing or decreasing the rope tension you can change the angle between the trapezoidal surfaces and thereby adjust it´s form to given circumstances and requirements. By changing the steel cable’s tension not only the complete object, but also certain selected parts can be transformed.





Vision

Kalzip Wettbewerb 2007, Kalzip My vision is to design a wall-system which is characterised by it´s simplicity in being produced and used, as well as in it´s flexibility for all kinds of usages. Being in a vertical state it´s not only a conventional partition-wall, but can also be used as a shelf, etc. Being in a horizontal state, the object can be used as a permanently modifiable and customisable seating.

Technology and Realization

The object consists of single trapezoidal surfaces homogeneously connected with each other. Alternately those connections are located between the highest and the lowest points, whereby the folded model is created. Depending on the intended use, a rope is pulled through the required highest points. The length of the steel cable can be modified by using a cable tensioner. This again causes a diversification of the entire item, so that it can be accommodated into the desired position, according to the intended use.



In order to make the model transformation possible the whole model is devided into singel segments, which will be put in shape (Miura Folding Technique) first and then reconnected together. The connection points - provided at the plates - will be held together by a steel cable. The steel cable can be used to manipulate the original shape of the object.

Transformations


This simple production method allows mass-production, which leads to the possibility of cheap fabrication. Because the employment of the item can be broadened to many scopes (partition wall, seating-accommodation, storage rack…) it is not complicated to arrange it with the given circumstances like culture, economies, environments, etc. The numerous usages, that can also inspire the ultimate customers creativity and guarantee market-success.


Model


The item can be produced in the desired form and size through a simple PRESSVERFAHREN. Once it is produced with this common method, it is very easy to position the holes for the cable, install eyelets, and pull the steel cable through the holes. With very little effort you can attain an outmost flexible and adjustable “wall-unit”.
